About Us

Nom de Plume Art started as a fun way to use art as therapy to relieve the stresses of everyday life. Having studied art in university, and having the desire to experiment, Nom de Plume Art came about with the idea to work with new technologies in resin, pigments, alcohol ink and one’s interest in natural crystals and home décor. Since then, interest grew in the type of abstract expressionism and modern art created as wall pieces and home décor objects. Today, Nom de Plume Art services the need to create unique bespoke pieces that create the unspoken conversation within a home or business. Our pieces offer customised designs and luxurious quality that speak volumes to guests and clients. Join us in creating conversations that inspire creativity.

About Resin

Resin is considered a type of plastic. Artists, carpenters, engineers, and the like, have the luxury of working with resin when it is in its liquid form. Resin pigments can be added to colour the resin or resin can be used in its natural colourless form to enhance and protect the textures and layers it is poured on creating a luxurious hand made piece that has a glass like finish. Resin also acts as an adhesive to secure objects attached such as crystals, glass pieces and more. Resin is known to be used in artworks, home décor, boating, aircrafts, and flooring, rendering it a durable material. It is important to note that even though resin is durable, it is not scratch resistant. As with every product, there are care instructions that will help preserve the longevity of your resin piece. These are listed below.

 Care Instructions

Resin Dos:

  • wipe resin with slightly damp microfiber cloth

  • use a small amount of soap on resin if necessary but always wipe first

  • dry boards immediately after cleaning

  • maintain wooden boards with small amounts of natural oil massaged into the grain with a cloth. Natural oils include coconut, linseed, mineral oils and can be used in combination with beeswax

  • clear odours and stains from wooden boards by sprinkling salt over wooden area and use half a lemon to rub salt on board

  • dust wall pieces with a feathery brush

Resin Don’ts:

  • cut on the resin parts of a board

  • submerge resin boards in water

  • put resin boards in the dishwasher

  • leave your resin board to soak in water

  • keep resin in direct sunlight for long periods of time

  • place extremely hot items on resin surface

  • use harsh chemicals or cleaning products on surfaces

  • wriggle gemstones attached to pieces

Even though we have selected what we believe to be the best resin, coaster and board materials in the Australian market, wear and tear is expected. This includes scratches and ring marks from hot cups. Following the above care instructions will ensure the endurance of your piece.

  • Resin is a pretty durable material, however, like most plastic materials, it has its limitations. A hot item on resin will heat up and leave marks that reflect the shape and texture of the hot item. This is a common occurance, especially on coasters. If the piece is left in the sun for prolonged periods, it may discolour or soften resin which can lead to crystals, broken glass and shells falling off. Basically, you need to follow the care instructions listed above.

  • As long as you are chopping on the wooden area. The resin will scratch if it makes contact with something sharp. You could also flip the board on a tea towel to protect the resin and chop on the reverse side. Personally, I would avoid using it as a chopping board and limit the knife contact to the wooden area to cheese knives.
